Ive gotta catch us up! Maybe Ill be updating this each month....havent been so good about jotting down our activities for each week. However, weve been busy and its been fun :)

This past week, Greyson had filled up his penny bank, so we decided to take it to Coinstar. Who knew that a big jar full of change would turn out to be $74.00! We were so excited! So, he got to put some in his savings acct., take some to the $$$$ store ( he picked out an airplane) and 1/3 of it will go to Little Ameressa.
Shes our sweet treat this week.
Ameressa is an Ethipoian child that Greysons Sunday school group at Chase Oaks Church has adopted this year as their Compassion Child. The money that the kids bring each Sunday helps to pay for her education, school supplies, clothes, ect. With Christmas approaching, they are now saving up to buy Ameressa a cow for her and her family.
I was explaining to Greyson why a cow will be such a wonderful gift for them to get at Christmas time. He responded with, "Well, I think we should also make some cupcakes to send her because chocolate cupcakes go really good with milk. She probably hasnt had a chocolate cupcake with milk before." I thought that was so sweet. But later that night, he almost brought me to tears. Hed been working on something in his room for awhile and he walked in with this picture that hed been drawing. He said that he wanted to send it to Ameressa with her cupcakes. Greyson is definitely talented when it comes to picking up his crayons. Hes always loved to do art! But, this picture was the most colorful, detailed picture Ive ever seen him do. Its a picture of a girl in front of her house with flowers and hearts in the windows. I was proud that hed been thinking of her hours later and spent so much time on it. Ill be sure to send it with his change!

Weve also been really busy this month during all the rainy, cool days weve had...Cleaning out ALL the closets! Why are my kids growing!!! Greyson grew 2 full sizes since last fall / winter. So, we put some things out for donation trucks. But, we have also delivered tupperwares of clothes to several friends with
kids in those sizes. Hopefully theyll enjoy them as much as we did. Its so hard for me to part with some of the outfits they looked so little and cute in :(

Greyson greets our Mailman, Dan, each day when hes dropping off our mail. He routinely comes within 30 minutes of us walking home from school with Greyson. So, we hang in the front yard and play and when he drives up, Greyson runs to get our mail from him. So, this week, we decided to give Mailman Dan a bag of Halloween candy to munch on while he delivers mail. Of course the week we decide to do this, Mailman Dan seems to be on a different schedule and we kept missing him. So, finally, Grey decided that itd be a nice surprise to just put it in the mail box for him. Ill have to add a picture of Mailman Dan soon. :)

Our giving bucket is full too! Greysons school is doing a food drive now through mid Novemeber. All the food is going to Life Source, which provides food, clothing, furniture, and financial assistance to those who are in need. So, we get to unload our "giving bucket" a little bit each day as he takes it to school with him.

Shedwyn gets her skates on for the end of National Zero Waste Week 2011

To celebrate the last day of National Zero Waste Week, I sent the 1000 Bins mascot Shedwyn, into Suffolks  rollerskating venue CurveMotion, to check out their recycling.

They have great recycling facilities behind the scenes, but dont have any specific recycling bins in the public zones.  Consequently customers end up throwing their empty bottles and cans into the general rubbish bin.

Even if there were public recycling bins, there is a real issue that the number of unemptied containers that are often thrown away by the customers, would quickly contaminate any efforts to recycle properly. So Shedwyn was on a mission to think of ways that could improve recycling without having to rely on expensive and sticky recycling bins.

After a spell of whizziness with the laptop and a touch of lamination, a simple methodology was born.  A  sign advising customers to leave their containers at the servery counter instead of shoving them in the bin!

Whether its an effective solution, only time will tell, but it is an idea thats worth trying and if response is low its well worth testing out new wording or different poster designs.

So with the job done, Shedwyn was ready to do a few laps around the roller rink before scooting off home to put her feet up for the rest of the day, but the bonkers old bird got so inspired by CurveMotions Charity Skateathon that she challenged herself to 50 laps, "Anything for charity", she said, knowing it would be a struggle to keep on her feet for even 25.

However, fifty laps later she was still going strong.

After a wobbly start, taking a tumble over a fallen-down child at lap 75, and peforming a spectacular forward-slide-and-knee-bounce herself during the 200th lap, our recycling bin champion knocked us off our chairs as she made it to 211 laps, the equivalent distance of a half-marathon!

The poor old girl couldnt walk for ages after shed come off the rink and was soon caught napping when she should have been on binwatch.

211 laps eh!  Whod have guessed that would happen this Sunday, rounding off National Zero Waste Week  with bruised knees.

So, could the moral of the story be that no matter what your goals, assumptions or expectations, Shedwyn has shown that its possible to exceed these, even if obstacles and setbacks get in the way?  We just need to to keep setting our sights much higher and pushing ourselves just that little bit more whether thats about recycling, reducing waste or other ambitions (government and industry are you listening?)

Then again, as a friend suggested after Shedwyns super-impressive tumble, perhaps the moral of the story is that she really should have worn kneepads!

So, while the bespectacled roving reporter nurses her knees, I wish you a happy end to National Zero Waste Week. I hope its been a great week for you.   Of course, if like me, youve enjoyed Shedwyns expoits with the 1000 Bins Challenge, it would be fab if you could sponsor her for her charity skateathon today.  It would help her knees get better much more quickly and its for a a brilliant cause too:  St Nicholas Hospice in Bury St Edmunds, which needs as much money as it can get to continue its great work.  You can find all you need at my Justgiving page or click the blue fundraiser badge at the top of the page.

So thank you all for your support this week and during the last three monthss 1000 bins challenge.  Its been spectacular.  Heres to National Zero Waste Week 2011.  Special thanks go to Mrs Green at MyZeroWaste for organising it.  With another successful week over, who knows what will happen next year! Whatever happens, I bet your bottom dollar it will be exciting.

Happy New Year to you and to me!

Okay, so the going on strict during the holidays was a courageous effort, but short lived.  Instead, the program went on hold as the realization that with family coming and hosting over 40 people (over the course of 4 evenings straight) was going to require a few glasses of wine...for my sanity alone.

So, I rejoined the clinic this Tuesday.

With a weigh-in of 180, Im happy to report that Im at 171.6 today.  Not bad!  Obviously there was lots of sodium and water weight, and Im burning a 2++ on the old pee-sticks.

I thought I would have more of a problem this week, but honestly, Im not craving anything.  Ive reverted back to my solid diet (see one of the many postings above which breaks down my daily intake and food combination) and Im cooking with gas now!

I must admit, a key motivation for me is that I am a bridesmaid in my BFFs wedding in August.  I just refuse to feel like a blob in chiffon next to her svelte body.  Plus, the groomsman that Im paired with is a manager at Moores Menswear, slim, tall and french (from Paris!!)  You kiddin me?  Im aiming to be a real arm charm for that Pierre Cardin!

Yeah...no.
Its funny.  The mother-of-the-bride is also an ex-Bernstein client (she lost 40 lbs and after a year, is also doing the 20lb yo-yo weight war) so weve both gone back to reclaim our bodies.  Shes in good shape to begin with.  Me on the other hand want to vanquish the backfat and thunder thighs forever.   We try on the potential dress next Saturday.  Ill put a deposit down on the dress, but Im not going to order the sze until Im down to my rose-petal strewn red-carpet weight!

So my strategy for this 40lb loss?

Its simply abundantly clear that carbs love me - too much.  The evening snacking, sugar and bread throws me into a lipogenesis faster than the big bang!

I cant eat it or I literally gain a pound overnight.

So apart from knowing (yes, I do know this intellectually, but have failed to action it effectively) this, Im going to make a concerted effort next week (while Im traveling) to pack what I need for food and stay away from the restaurant.  In addition, alongside my trusty Vanilla Proti shakes and homemade meals, will be my brand new Running Room runners, shorts and a shirt so I can exercise.

This has truly been the missing piece to the puzzle for a good decade for me.  Of course, the kids and career consume every waking moment (and volunteering and carving out some precious time for hubby claims the rest of my time) but I have to get active.  I cant keep blaming the food, when its the output that matters too.

You gotta burn what you eat.

But when youre on Bernstein - consuming only 700-800 calories per day, youre bodys taking what it needs from your fat stores.  Good riddance lipoluggage!

Im just going to help that along a little bit with some extra walking or treadmill jogging.

Heaven forbid I swim in public.

No - not yet.  Maybe on the next trip...

Pledging to save energy ASAP to help Baglady

Today finally sees the start of the secret launch of Bagladys ASAP Pledge Round 2.  The official launch is 11.01.11, but Baglady being an impatient old gal decided to make the most of the tradition for New Years Resolutions and the opportunity to get us Internet peeps thinking about sustainability.  You might remember my last blog post about it here.

Now I know that youre used to me thinking big and tackling some huge challenges, such as organising rubbish free tasks or setting up local collection schemes for Recycle Week, but for this years ASAP (As Sustainable As Possible) pledge, Ive decided to tackle something really small but just as important, much closer to home

You see, despite making a big effort to reduce waste, use public transport, buy local and keep the heating off until November, Ive still not sorted out the simple fact that I am always forgetful about turning off the light in the downstairs loo.  Asimple thing, but the kids do it too...so much so that my husband is always on our backs about Mr Invisible spending far too much time on the toilet!

So, Ive decided that my pledge this year (with the help of the children) will be to give up leaving the light on in the loo AND elsewhere in the house.  And while Im on the subject Ive also decided to take up the idea of turning off my laptop whenever its not in use...instead of my "leaving it on just in case I need it later" routine.

Other bloggers are also on board with their ASAP pledges and have either already blogged about them or will be doing so very soon, so for inspiration keep your eyes peeled for updates from MyZeroWaste,  Cambridge EcoThrifter, From Rat Race to Positive Parent, Violet Posy, Just Jotting Along, A Modern Mother, Jo Beaufoix and Rosie Scribble.

Pledging is simple.  You just need to pop along to Bagladys website, make your pledge and pass it on via Facebook, Twitter or through your blog, encouragiing your friends to do the same.  All pledges registered on Bagladys site by midnight on 17th June will also be entered into a random draw where one lucky person will win a £100 voucher courtesy of Baglady Productions to spend at sustainable retailer Wiggly Wigglers.

So, go on...please join us in adopting Baglady for 2011 and  if you do Id love to know if youve made a pledge. In the meantime, Im off to make mine now....

The end of an era and the start of a new chapter

Well, there had to come a point when I pulled my finger out, pulled up my socks and opened my laptop to finally write a blogpost.

I know Ive been utter pants over the last few months.

Its not as though Ive had no news to share. Ive probably had too much and I never even blogged about the impromptu moment I asked the legendary Michael Parkinson about his rubbish.

But now that the school holidays are upon us, this is the first occasion Ive had to properly slow down since September last year and stay at home instead of gallivanting around the country.

And this holiday feels like a period of transition in more ways than one.

On a personal level, our youngest has just left primary school and is getting ready to start middle school in September.  Yes, that little man who was only 3 when I started this blog has just turned 9 and is growing up.  To watch him confidently leave one school and be ready to embark on the next stage of his life feels like a real milestone.

Elsewhere, Ive spent the last 8 months coming to terms with my mothers unexpected death in December.  Nothing can prepare you for losing a parent and Im very aware that the constant flow of activities and deadlines this year have kept me very distracted, so much so that when we completed the sale of her house last week, it kicked me so hard that it felt like shed died all over again.  My mother taught me lots about whats important in life and much of that teaching was in her death.  One day, I hope to share her wisdom - not yet but soon - the wisdom of an average woman who would never have expected to have been considered remarkable but in many ways truly was.  I really wish she was still here to see whats around the corner.  I know shed be one of the first to laugh at my misadventures and then, without me knowing, quietly share her pride.

For things are changing on The Rubbish Diet front and at a rate of knots too.  Remember that Nesta competition I entered last year in partnership with Cwm Harry and Rachelle Strauss from My Zero Waste?  Were still right in the middle of the challenge and following the success of running the Rubbish Diet in Suffolk and Shropshire (which even saw 22 households in one street taking part in Shrewsbury), the novel bin slimming action is spreading to Ludlow and very soon Powys, the latter of which will be launched during this years National Zero Waste Week, 2-8 September.   If you havent checked out Zero Waste Week yet, go and have a peek at its new website and do get involved, especially if you need to get tough with your food waste.

But theres lots happening between now and then.  Dont miss yours truly helping a family slim their bin as part of the Throwaway Britain Tonight documentary, which is being broadcast this Thursday 1st August (9pm, ITV1).  Without giving away the final reveal, I cant wait for you to see how Sandra and her family tackled their waste.

And to give you even further inspiration to reduce waste, Ive been pulling together the first UK tour of the Clean Bin Project documentary, which will see my old Canadian blogging friend Jen and her partner Grant travelling around the UK, to attend screenings of their movie in Brighton, Suffolk, York, Shrewsbury (tbc) and Wiltshire.  The official dates and venues for late August will be published soon, but if youd like to know more please email me.

But coming back to the most major thing thats happening in my life right now, although Im taking time out to enjoy the events of the summer holidays and pause for reflection, its also a time for significant change, especially as the success of The Rubbish Diet trials featured in the Nesta competition has led to much interest from a range of local authorities.

The Rubbish Diet has already travelled a long way from being just a random housewife with a blog.  In the last year, it has developed into a website and a team to support the Nesta Waste Reduction competition.  And now, still in conjunction with the Do Think Tank Cwm Harry (the people who are also behind the Peoples Design Lab), we are preparing for the next stage, which will see The Rubbish Diet becoming a social enterprise, developed to help households and communities reduce their waste by 50% within as little time as eight weeks.  More info on the next stage will be available soon, as will the final results of the Nesta competition later in the year.  Meanwhile if The Rubbish Diet challenge launches in your neck of the woods, do join in and say hello.

With so much happening it really does feel like the end of an era and the beginning of an exciting and potentially nerve-wracking new chapter.

Thank you for sticking with the rubbish adventures of this Almost Mrs Average over the last five years.  I know there are lots more adventures to be had yet, but from now on it will be in a very different context.

I just hope I will still have time to blog about them.

Me being serious on TV Dispatches Britains Rubbish C4 8pm

Morland Sanders, investigates Britains rubbish for C4 Dispatches

I recently did some filming for the Dispatches documentary thats being broadcast tonight. Its called "Britains Rubbish" and will be aired at 8pm on Channel 4.

When I was asked to contribute, a huge part of me wanted to batten down the hatches, draw the curtains and say "Thanks but no thanks". I normally stay away from the heavy stuff and regular readers will know I dont normally campaign against issues, but instead promote ideas that help empower householders to reduce waste, even if its just by a small amount.

But as I was about to say "No thank you" to the documentary makers, my thoughts turned back to why I keep raising awareness of recycling and waste reduction. Its because it really is such a serious issue, despite my own natural tendency towards lightening the mood. And I am still as passionate about getting people to talk about their rubbish as Ive ever been. Furthermore Im a constant troubleshooter, who loves sharing positive information that Ive gathered, even if it has turned this average householder into a bit of a waste geek. So, as I gave my reply I found myself changing my mind and saying "yes".

I knew the documentary could offer another avenue to raise awareness of all the advances that have taken place in recent years, including the fantastic On-Pack Recycling Labelling standard that helps shoppers better understand whether an item can be recycled. Theres also the news how popular brands have made steady inroads into "lightweighting" packaging, designing out wasteful components as well introducing a greater percentage of recycled materials into their products. Such developments should make it far easier for shoppers to dramatically reduce their waste.

However, it soon became clear during filming that whilst being able to demonstrate some of the aforementioned positive points, the experience actually revealed that we are still a long way off from the ideal of a totally transparent system that consumers can easily rely on.

Participating in the documentary gave me the first opportunity in ages to examine a wide range of packaging and I was shocked at that no matter what strides have been made in the last couple of years, labelling across products is still highly inconsistent, with many lines not giving any clear instructions. There were plenty of examples where the text was too small to read easily or simply had outdated advice. Where some products would state that the packaging was recyclable (where facilities exist), other products packaged in the same material stated that it could not yet be recycled.

Despite well thought-out labelling standards, design guidelines developed by the British Retail Consortium and WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) and strong engagement campaigns to get these adopted by retailers and brands, it has become clear that much of the grocery sector is still lagging behind the need to hurry change. Coupled with this are many examples of overpackaged products that have are still being introduced as new lines.

As a shopper, consumer, householder and waste geek, this is far more than just frustrating. It is a major concern that clear consumer advice is not coming at the speed that is needed and that if the government is serious about its Zero Waste goals and waste prevention strategy, change in the manufacturing sector needs to be implemented faster than is currently tolerated, whether by government or by industry itself.

And the same could be said for the processing of mixed plastics packaging. Its seems very much a futile exercise to invest in labelling if recycling facilities arent widespread.  It is very encouraging to see commercial plants for mixed plastics being implemented by Biffa and new developments in sorting technologies that are starting to be rolled out by Veolia, but the UK needs deeper investment to make more plants available at a faster speed with flexible contracts that enable disposal authorities to use them.

As things stand, it is increasingly difficult for busy households to shrink their packaging waste when so many local authorities are still unable to recycle common items such as yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, meat trays, ready meal trays, fruit punnets and the cake tubs, the latter of which are becoming an increasingly ubiquitous item in the confectionary aisle. I often argue that its the consumers choice to buy these products and I agree that many could chose to vote with their wallets and make alternative choices. However, not everyone has the impetus, the awareness, the time, motivation, access to choice or even the money to tackle their household waste in such way, and we shouldnt be expect it to ultimately be our responsibility either.

So whose responsibility is it to tackle the UKs waste problem?  Naturally we need to start with the brands and the manufacturers. After all, thats where our rubbish actually starts, during the design and manufacturing process. However it only then becomes rubbish if waste operators and local authorities cant collect it because the facilities arent in place or they dont have markets onto which it can be sold on. However demand is changing and Ive spoken to a variety of manufacturers, ranging from bottling plants to recycled plastic tile-makers who want to buy more recycled plastic from the UK.   So its their responsibility too, to find sustainable solutions and a steady bank of customers. But then theres government, which has the power to legislate, to set much tougher targets, show greater leadership and make better investment to kickstart zero waste economies.

But its all too easy to fall into the blame culture, which we often witness when one sector has a foodfight with the other.  Its time to move forward from that and whilst the big boys battle it out, I believe that consumers can have a key role to play too in reducing our residual packaging waste and food waste where possible. Whether that means taking a small amount of time to clear up any ambiguities over local recycling advice, switching from disposable to reusable products, boycotting overpackaged products, composting,  following great campaigns such as Love Food Hate Waste, Recycle Week or Zero Waste Week, or even asking for better recycling facilities in local neighbourhoods, it means we can take more control over our bins. And if youre unclear on the packaging guidelines tell your supermarket that youll leave it all with them, asking that they get back to you.

The waste problem wont go away until we all start working together.  Waste reduction wont be sorted without the help of us, the consumer, even if we are mostly beholden to whats for sale in the shops. Against the background need to preserve our material resources and save energy, as a society, it starts by individuals taking more interest and being more aware of some small changes that could make a big difference and the wider consequences of what happens to the stuff that we chuck in our bins.

The documentary will be aired tonight and Ill be happy to follow up on any issues raised, as soon as I can.   However, Im away for much of this week, including joining a discussion panel in London for tomorrows Womans Hour (BBC Radio 4, 10-11am)

So in the meantime, if youre a householder who is interested in how you can battle the elements of your rubbish bin and reduce the waste that goes in there, www.recyclenow.com and www.lovefoodhateswaste.com are great places to start, as is the fantastic website www.myzerowaste.com.  Of course you can also ring your local council for advice and if youre the chatty type, talk to friends and neighbours about how they reduce their rubbish.  Youll never know what local tips youll find out.

But remember, dont feel guilty about what you cant do, just feel relieved about what you can!

Many thanks go to the production team at Blakeway for inviting me to add my small contribution and also to Jackie and her family who were brave enough to let us go through their rubbish on camera.  I dont know which of my contributions will be featured but Im looking forward to watching what else was unearthed during the wider filming.  More information about tonights programe is shown below:

Dispatches: Britains Rubbish, Channel 4 10 October 2011, 8pm

Dispatches lifts the lid on Britains bins and asks what the plan is to tackle the countrys growing rubbish problem.

Reporter Morland Sanders travels the UK in the wake of the governments Waste Policy Review to find out about bin collections, litter, excessive packaging and Britons secret bin habits.  He finds householders angry about their bins not being collected every week and fly-tipping setting resident against resident.

He asks whether we can do more to help reduce the rubbish problem ourselves and sets a family the challenge of living without a bin for a fortnight. Can they really recycle everything?

On the high street, he questions whether we are simply sold too much packaging with the things we buy, making us throw far too much away, and sifts through litter to see who should be doing more to keep Britain tidy.

He also talks to the people who collect, sort and recycle our waste and discovers what happens to our paper and plastics once they are collected. Does profit win out over green considerations?

And he investigates whether the waste companies are really solving our rubbish problem.

Ive always liked a good piece of meat !

MEAT

For meat, since you season them to taste with a range of spices, I will precut the meat (Breakfast 2 oz -Lunch 3 oz -Supper 2 oz) for my daily ration, cook them to taste, and put them in the fridge. Or, I pre-cut and put in micro steamer bag, and cook in when I need them. They stay fresher and more flavourful that way.

I was using Pataks Tandoori paste for a couple of weeks (because I love curry) but again, the salt retains water. I only use it a couple of times a week now. HOwever, you can use all the fresh garlic, spices, pepper, mustard, pre-approved ketchup, Kikoman soya sauce, etc., and make your own bbq sauces to rival any store bought stuff.

Ive also bought the M&M honey & garlic chicken and the M&M lemon & herb chicken. These are excellent and if precooked, stay really moist and flavourful. Their turkey breast is also good, and a single portion is good for two days. Great for slicing and putting on salads. Plus, the family loves them too, so I dont have to make separate meals.

For lean beef, I picked up the 6-pack of M&M filet mignon (removed the bacon for me) and when we bbqd on the weekend, I had my beef portion and bbq just like everyone else. For a beef alternative (that you can enjoy more often) I picked up the Bison raclette meat at IGA and we had a raclette - I just had to use the PAM on the raclette - and with the spices I usually use, it was great. I didnt miss a thing.

I also boil a lot of eggs for mornings, or use the Naturegg (Original) egg whites for omelettes, etc. With veggies, capers, pepper and basil, its really good. I also put 3 egg whites in a glass bowl, nuke it for 3 mins, top with recommended salsa for a morning protein. Thats like a Mexican omelette. Also, put a slice of Kraft fat free cheddar slice on it and its even yummier. However, Ill only use cheese about once a month. Youc an use it up to twice a week, but I just choose not to.

I also make egg salad with the allowed mayonnaise, celery, onion, etc., and with crackers, its a great lunch dish.

Another good egg white omelette recipe is spinach, tomatoes (or other additional veggies) with dill and freshly cracked pepper. YUM! As an extra Sunday morning bonus, Ill add a slice of Kraft Fat Free cheddar cheese slice, which adds some special cheesy flavour to it. Even my health-conscious niece gave it a two thumbs up!

My favourite lately is the Loblaws Presidents Choice Honey & Maple Turkey breast cold cuts. There is 175 g in a pack, and youre allowed 200g for your 2 protein portions per day, which is quite a lot of meat. I get the best fat burning with it. Youre technically only supposed to use it once a week, but I use it more often than that for ease and convenience. The only problem again is that its high in sodium, so retains water.

The nurses always recommend to stick to fresh meat that are non-processed. They are heavier and keep your belly feeling fuller, but require more prep time.

The future of hard plastics recycling is here!

Ive enjoyed many unique experiences since starting this blog, but there have been none so fascinating as a recent project, where I accompanied waste management company FCC Environment to find out what happens to the hard plastics that are recycled through the Household Waste Recycling Centres in Suffolk.

Yes, you read that correctly. Hard plastics, aka rigid plastics, where examples include broken toys, garden furniture, kitchen utensils and even coat-hangers. You name it, if its made from hard plastic, even if it has metal components, Suffolk HWRCs can recycle it!

Yes, even broken loo seats!

I wanted to find out how effective and efficient the process was and share the results with the residents of Suffolk, who can help the county divert even more of this material from being buried in landfill.  After all, if weve got such excellent facilities for recovery, it seems utter nonsense to waste it.

The video of our discoveries, prepared by FCC_Environment  and Suffolk County Council for this years Suffolk Show, introduces the innovative recycling process developed by EMR & MBA Polymers, which not only creates recycled plastic that matches the quality of virgin polymer, but uses only 10% of the energy required to make equivalent polymers from oil.

So if youve ever been frustrated over why your hard plastic gubbins cant be recycled, the answer is that they can. For more information, have a peek at the video below:

If youre attending this years Suffolk Show, more details will be available from the FCC Environment stand (580).  I will be there on Thursday 7th June, where I will be delighted to talk about the visit as well as any aspect of the Rubbish Diet.  More information about the project can be found in the FCC Environmental press release.

A good dilemma to have clothes shopping

Bikini FlabsImage by StreetFly JZ via Flickr

Well, I am officially 43 lbs lighter than when I started.

I cant believe it... I just cant believe it!

I was feeling so silly at work last week. It was Monday morning, and I pulled out some pants - light size 14 capris, recently purchased - appropriate for my back-to-back meetings slated for the day.

I slipped them on, and I stared as they hung like a wet paper bag.

Here I was only two weeks previously, shopping at MEXX, and jumping for joy that I could slip into a size 14. A little snug in the hips (of course) but good in the waist. However, here I was, my pins floating in the pant legs, and searching for a belt (no loops) to keep them from slipping down and looking baggy.

No luck - I looked like such a shlub!

I chuckled with my colleague who suggested I get them taken in. Normally I would, but the amazing thing with this diet is that literally every 2 weeks, youre dropping down a full size.

I just added them to the next clothing stack of things that are waiting to pass along to friends or to take to Value Village. Ill be packing up my winter coats too.

So - I brought my daughter shopping right away that evening, to replenish my wardrobe with some pants for work. Of course, I had to bring her to Mrs. Tiggy Winkles after she endured a good chunk of time for my needs. Actually, she had a great time critiquing my selections.

What did I come away with? Two pants in size 12 and one in size...10! The first time since I was 25 years old - geez - memories of 16 years ago. I also bought a bikini (size L, instead of XL or 1X!) Yes, a bikini.

I also had to buy new bras (again) this week. Ive gone down from a 40DD to a 36C.

They dont mess around with the inches, I tell you. I can easily button up a very expensive jacket I bought last year in Toronto (which was far too tight, but the material was just gorgeous) to now it fitting comfortably, elegantly and properly.

I didnt want to buy too much because I still have another 20-25 lbs to lose. Luckily the summer collections are on sale now, making room for the fall collections.

Its a nice problem to have...but I feel like Ill need a part-time job just to afford a whole new winter professional wardrobe Ill need at my final weight.

Here I come Montreal - shopping!!!

(I wonder if they still sell those tight Jordache jeans with the embroidery on the back pocket...)

MONTH 3 New Beginnings

Picking worms from plants, Belmont girls farm ...Image by The Library of Congress via Flickr

Im quite excited today. My third month on the diet resulted in new numbers - in the 160s.

I didnt find the first two weeks that good though. I was hovering in the mid-170s, not moving very much. I even had a faint panic attack when my numbers went up a little on a mid-week weigh-in.

What had happened? I follow the diet strictly, and havent changed my diet much?

Well, I realized that I had mistakenly eaten something wrong. Wrong in that the Applesnax applesauce my husband bought for me (through my cell phone instructions) was the Organic brand with "natural sugars." Same bottle and label, but different variety. It wasnt Applesnax Unsweetened.

So, unbeknownst to me, I was injesting sugar every morning for the entire week and didnt realize it. (Come to think of it though, it did taste sweeter... but obviously to my detriment.)

Lesson learned: Stick to the food list and check your brands like a hawk.

Transition Town opportunity for Bury St Edmunds

If you are interested in any element of sustainability, resource efficiency or community development in Bury St Edmunds, I suggest putting 15th May in your diary and heading along to the Fox Inn (pictured above), where you will find out more about how Bury can become a Transition Town.

Transition Towns have been in place since 2006, founded by Rob Hopkins, who created the first community in Totnes, Devon. Now there are over 1000 similar initiatives in 34 countries, all seeking to develop a more sustainable and resilient society, which strengthens local skills and resources in order to become less dependant on a fossil-fuel based culture.

Proposed by county councillor Mark Ereira, the Bury St Edmunds initiative will have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the more established groups in the East of England including Suffolks Sustainable Bungay, Greener Framlingham, Transition Lavenham,Transition Ipswich and Greener Sax.  All it needs is the support of local residents, local businesses, entrepreneurs and community innovators to kickstart the action.  The meeting held on 15th May will be the first step to see if this can happen.

Although I wont be able to attend during the evening (due to a prior engagement with another Suffolk transition group), I fully support the launch of a local group and I have already committed to developing ideas that will help reduce Bury St Edmunds waste footprint both within the community and the business sector.

So whatever your background, if youd like to know more or would like to take an active part in creating a more sustainable Bury St Edmunds, please do get involved.

The first meeting will be held at 6:45pm, on Tuesday 15th May at The Fox Inn, Eastgate St, IP33 1XX.  For more information, please contact Richard Frost on 07590 515992 richard.frost3@virgin.net or Mark Ereira mark.ereira@suffolk.gov.uk 07913 818838.

Further details about Transition Towns can be found at www.transitionnetwork.org.
