Monday Meeting The final weigh in for the Rubbish Diet Challenge 2012

Welcome to the last Monday Meeting for the Rubbish Diet Challenge 2012.

Last November I put a request on Twitter and Facebook to see if anyone fancied slimming their bins in 2012.  Amazingly eight people volunteered straight-away and at the end of January, when routines had settled back to normal after the festivities of Christmas, the Rubbish Diet Challenge began, featuring weekly Monday weigh-ins and mini-challenges throughout the course of eight weeks.

Eight households slimming their bins in just eight weeks, all living in different parts of the country, including one in the US, all with different routines, contrasting priorities, variations in local recycling collections and wide-ranging household sizes.

But this was not an experiment or a test of perseverance, with me standing over them all with my beady eye.  It was more a realistic timescale, that would give each household the freedom and flexibility to set their own waste reduction goals, and find out the information they needed to reduce their waste in the best way that suited their lifestyle.

For all participants, it involved finding out exactly what they could recycle at the kerbside and further afield in their locality and use the facilities to which they had access. For some it involved buying less or switching to reusable products and for others it also involved having a bash at home composting.

And everyone had a different starting point, including Ness, with her family of five, who had two full wheelie bins each fortnight (often accompanied by side bags), and Jax with her family of 6 (her baby was born in Wk 7), whose rubbish bin was always just a third to half-way full.

However, as others agreed, it didnt matter how little rubbish they thought they were throwing away, times change and services often improve, so each wanted to find out more. And its great to see that in every household, at least a 50% reduction has been achieved, with some households achieving this in the first four weeks and others achieving much much more since.

While most participants were happily settled with their new slimmer bins, three households decided to take the finale Zero Waste challenge for Week 8 of the Rubbish Diet, with Suffolks Kate & Terry-anna, and New Yorks Amy, pushing the limits to see how low they could go.

And my word, did they do brilliantly! Terry-annas bag of landfill rubbish, pictured above, was only half the height of a sauce bottle and Kates household only produced just two mug-sized bags. Amy over the States is also pleased with her attempt at the challenge, producing so little rubbish that theres not even enough to fill half a small carrier bag, and weighing no more than 1.4 kilogrammes.

But this challenge is not just about attempting a Zero Waste Week.  Its actually the build up to that, which is more important.  To quote Tim, who knew that he wouldnt be in a position to attempt a ZW week, "Its the habits Ive acquired during the eight-week programme thatll make the difference".   And you can see the impact of this in his last blogpost about his experience.  Tim had started the challenge with a very full bin.

For many who have participated, even though the guided challenge has finished, their own discoveries towards waste reduction hasnt stopped.  Just as Donna, who slimmed her households waste by 50%, said to me only last week, "It isnt over in 8 weeks - its just begun!"

I think Ness, who orginally started with two full wheelie bins, would agree with that.  As I was leaving her house on Friday, after shed been interviewed for BBC Radio Suffolk, she asked whether it needed to stop there and made it clear that she wants her Rubbish Diet to continue.  Well there is plenty of scope for that as well as having more laughs in the process.

I suppose introducing her to the Recycling Centre for the first time, bringing in a Master Composter to help her compost and poking around her mouldy fruit, have all been interesting ways to strengthen our friendship,  And it is unfortunate that she had a poorly dog, who sabotaged any attempts she had to slim that bin right down last week.  But moving forward, she is now volunteering to get rid of the second bin, which she no longer has a use for.  When she first embarked on the challenge, she was adamant she would keep it as a comfort blanket.  So I am quite sure this wont be the last youll hear of Nesss Rubbish Diet.

But for now, its time for me to hang up my virtual bin-diving gloves for the Rubbish Diet Challenge 2012 and take the opportunity to thank everyone who has taken part, including all the households that have let me follow their waste-busting adventures, as well as those who have been inspired to join in along the way.  Everyone has just been blimmin brilliant and Im also grateful to the Mark Murphy Show at BBC Radio Suffolk, which has followed the challenge from the very beginning.

The list below shows the starting points as well as the final week results (please note that this was not a competition and participants were able to chose their own description of monitoring, which suited them best.  Also some collections are fortnightly, so for those, the list also includes their latest fortnightly results as well as a separate final weeks results). Im still waiting for some of the final results to come in and these will be updated as soon as they are ready. In the meantime, do try and listen to the great interviews that were broadcast on BBC Radio Suffolk last week, with Kate & Ness.

Kates interview: http://bbc.in/wROWm9 FF>> 1h42: available until Wednesday
Nesss interview: http://bbc.in/w9BdF7 FF>>2h38s: available until Friday

Its OWL time! I should have studied

After the first week on Atkins Induction, I was pretty concerned about my weight, so I decided to switch to the second stage of Atkins, known as OWL (Ongoing Weight Loss). OWL allows me to eat nuts, seeds, berries, soft cheese and yogurt in addition to the Induction list of foods. I still have to eat less than 45 grams of carbohydrate each day, but that number seems so much bigger after having spent a week on 20 grams per day. For the last week, I have dined on full-fat greek yogurt for breakfast, snacked on raspberries, and devoured roasted almonds on every break in between my classes.

I felt like a kid in a candy factory, as in a crazy, magical, chocolate-river, sugar-teacup kind of place. Just being able to eat these three foods made me ecstatic. Add to that the ability to drink beer (which is allowed in moderation) and Im feeling the best I have in days. My weight loss has slowed, and Im a bit less cranky. All that said, Id like to share what has become one of my favorite meals in the last two weeks, an Atkins-friendly version of a tuna salad.

Sriracha Avocado Tuna Salad

7 oz. can chunk light Tuna in water, drained

1/2 Haas Avocado

1/2 c. chopped Cucumber

1 stalk chopped Celery

1/2 tsp cumin

1-2 Tbs lemon juice

1/4 tsp Sriracha chili sauce (or more depending on how hot you like it... rawr)

salt and pepper to taste

Mash the avocado in a large bowl, mix in tuna, cucumber, celery, lemon juice, spices and Sriracha. Grab fork. Eat.

nom nom nom... halfway gone

The only downside to all of this OWL wonder is that it have become increasingly annoying to exercise, in particular to get out and run. My body has completely depleted its reserves of glycogen (the stored form of glucose, one of the most readily available forms of fuel in the body) and is now using mostly ketone bodies from breaking down fat. Running feels like hell, particularly after a mile or so when what little glucose I have in my blood has been used up. Ketone bodies are a decent form of fuel for many of the bodies organs, but not as much for the brain or for the muscles. That runners wall that I normally hit after three to five miles is now coming up much sooner. I do not like it. Ive been using it as an excuse to be lazy.

Im looking forward to Paleo, which as a part of its athlete-friendly program, encourages a higher consumption of carbohydrates and demands a much higher level of physical activity. I have one week until the switch. No more being lazy for me.

Ornamental melons food waste

(Photo credit: Bettnet on Flickr Creative Commons License)

How I wish I had the patience to carve fruit like this.  The best I can do is to create an oddity of star-shaped slices from a hacked apple, a technique I learned a while back when trying to reinvigorate my childrens interest in fruit.  They were going through that phase, turning up their noses at anything but grapes and for a while much of the produce that I used to cart home from the supermarket would end up in the compost bin.

In short, our home was embellished with a weekly bowl of fruit whose purpose had become increasingly ornamental and it seemed I was the worst offender.  Not only did I keep buying it automatically without thinking the issue through, Id repeat shopping habits that were just plain daft.

For instance, take my love of melons.  Id spot them in the supermarket and pop one - or even two - in my trolley in anticipation of enjoying it later, thinking about the mouthwatering taste and refreshing texture.  Then Id arrive home, unpack, juggle the children and cook dinner and end up too blimmin knackered to even think about taking a knife to the fruit Id imagined myself devouring.

This pattern would repeat itself for days, with the melon perched on my kitchen worktop. Against a backdrop of busy family life, thoughts of its stickiness and mess-creating potential would stand in the way of the promise of it tickling the tastebuds.  Eventually, it would just go off, creating that all familiar pungent melon stink and end up being tossed into the compost bin.  The following week it would be replaced by a whole new fresh piece of fruit and the cycle of desire and inconvenience would begin once more.

When I told this story on  Radio 4s Womans Hour last week, I was met with an incredible response from friends and Twitter followers.  The tale of my ornamental melons attracted a fair portion of light-hearted innuendo banter, but after the laughs were over, reactions settled into shared stories of similar habits that friends recognised in themselves, telling me about their ornamental pineapples and other fruity installations.

It really is startling that - thanks in part to habits like this - as a country we still throw away 8.3 million tonnes of food, which could have been eaten.  That amounts to roughly £50 of food being wasted in domestic bins per month.  Extrapolate the melon story to the contents of the fridge and wasted leftovers, it becomes easy to see how this mounts up.

The experts say that tackling food waste comes down to planning and they are right.  Planning meals, budgeting properly and taking a shopping list really does help.  However, Id go beyond that and say it also requires much more. Realising the impact on the family budget. awareness of why food waste is such an environmental issue, being able to identify with your own daft habits, developing a conviction to change and then adopting new ideas that enable you to do so are all equally important factors.

Four years ago I was totally pants at managing food waste.  As well as the fruity debacle, Id think nothing of tossing out-of-date yoghurts in the bin along with leftovers from the serving bowl.   Im a terrible planner, a half-hearted cook and even now a shopping list still fills me with fear of control as opposed to the helpful guide it should be.

However, I stumbled through all sorts of changes in my habits.  I stopped buying the stuff that Id regularly throw out. I swapped the time-consuming huge weekly shop for a couple of very short visits, instead buying only the fresh produce that we really needed and I also got into the habit of using up leftovers.  We saved loads of dosh in the meantime.   I admit that I am by no means the picture of perfection.  Threats from my husband, who sometimes reveals an unusal desire to post up some of my more dodgy looking carrots, could bear witness to that.  But addressing food waste has really made an enormous impact on our household.

So, if food waste is your thing and you are now determined to do something about it, dont just take my word for it.  I can tickle you away from using your rubbish bin, but for some really decent advice youll find no better website than www.lovefoodhatewaste.com.  Its full of facts and figures to get you motivated and is packed with top tips that range from using up veg that might appear to be at deaths door, recipes for leftovers, how best to use the freezer and understanding date-labelling.  If you use Facebook, you can also keep in touch with updates via the new Love Food Hate Waste community page.

Now coming back to those melons...Ive just done a quick calculation and reckon Ive probably saved somewhere in the region of £300 in the last three and a half years... and that ladies and gentleman is without the "Two for £3" deals.

Flippin eck.

£300.

For once I declare myself officially speechless!

Non Bernstein options and other blasphemous musings

So my colleague (a 30-year retired diplomat) and fab-u-lous, amazing, worldly and grounded woman, tipped me off to her secret.

The Montignac diet.

Now, we all know that the women in France have a different approach to eating.  Everything in moderation, a glass of good red wine per day (not tetrapack swill) and eating very slowly.

Well, how anyone can refuse the gastronomique delights courtesy of Le Cordon Bleu when its right under your apartment balcony and on every street corner is beyond me, but these broads can manage the temptation.

Well, my friend (who was posted to Paris for 5 years in the mid-90s...yeah, rough life!) said that everyone there swears by the Montignac approach, and was her weight loss regime then, and maintains it to this day.

For the uninitiated to Monsieur Michel Montignac, its a similar Bernstein approach - a low glycemic diet that removes the carbs and ups the proteins.  For more info see http://www.montignac.com/

I like the concept, and for those of us who get hyperspasmodic arm jerks every time we have to reach for our Visa card to pay for another week or more of Bernstein, it could be a possible do-it-yourself solution.

And guess what...?  You get to drink red wine!!

Hold your baguettes and berets girls, this could be a winner.

Weeks 1-3

As the structure (or scripture) goes, according to my 57" frame, I could eat the following:

* No white bread, rice, potatoes, pasta or sugar (same as Bernstein)
* Fruit - any kind is allowed
* Vegetables (no beets, corn or carrots)
* Grilled meat or fish, whole eggs allowed
* Not more than 2 slices of whole wheat or multigrain bread (they have their own Montignac bread based on specific techniques and scientific study...at $10 a bag.)

Where the interesting bit comes in is in the combination in which food may or may not be eaten.  For instance:
  1. Do not combine fruit with anything - eat alone always as a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack
  2. Do not combine complex carbs with meat.  Meat can only be combined with vegetables.  Apparently putting everything together causes the body to implode, create noxious gases and just revolt.
  3. Eligible snacks during the day includes almonds, cheese, a hard boiled egg or fruit
  4. Plus, olive oil is allowed for cooking or vinegrettes, etc
  5. Herbs are welcomed
  6. Good red wine is allowed (but no liquor or white wine)
The key after the first 3 weeks, whereby your stomach shrinks and your metabolism has sufficiently kicked in, is to maintain a 1500 caloric intake.   You can bring in some whole wheat pasta, etc., but calorie counting becomes the key.
______

Well in theory, this is a similar approach to Bernstein.  Most of the eligible and non-eligible foods are there, except for the oil and red wine.

Red wine - une verre du vin rouge - mais oui!

As well, from my own Bernstein journey, I have found success in limiting the limited fruits and carbs to the mornings and early afternoons, and maintaining steady protein throughout the day.  Veggies - I dont even count them, I just use what I want and need.  Given that they are water and very low calorie, its not going to kick me out of ketosis.

I just might keep this little French method in my back pocket for when Im cash-strapped and down to my fighting weight.

Its worked for my friend...and the french approach to food is obviously working for that little orphan Madeline...and Pepe le Pews girlfriend... oh, and Juliette Binoche!

Its exactly three years since

Saturday, February 27, 2016

...I started blogging about rubbish.

Three blimmin years!

That sounds like a bit of a confession, especially since this blog was intended to last for eight weeks,  but Ill save you the pain of too much personal reminiscing.  If you really want a bit of that, check out this post from last year and this special celebratory number from 2009.

Instead of looking back, I want to take this opportunity to cast our minds to the future and how the subject of waste is going to remain a hot and relevant topic.

For instance it wont be long until April, when the cost of throwing rubbish into landfill will suddenly rise to £56 per tonne, and if you think thats steep, by 2014 well be looking at a cost of £80 tonne.  When you consider that landfill tax was just £24 per tonne when I started this blog, its easy to see the financial incentives for councils to stop burying our rubbish and encourage householders to divert it to recycling instead.

In fact, our local paper published today news that if Suffolk councils did nothing about the amount of waste going to landfill, the countys tax bill would rise from £8,253,739 in 2010 to £13,756,232 in 2014.  Woah - that would be some burden on us taxpayers!   So, its a good job our council is pretty progressive with its recycling streams (Suffolk is 5th in the league table, recycling 50.6% of our municipal waste). There are plans in place locally, within councils and at grassroots level to meet even higher targets by 2015.

What really concerns me though, is that across the UK, the public sector is hitting a time of real uncertainty, with severe budget cuts, council reorganisations and redundancies. Frontline services are being hit as well as a range of services across the board, so it will be no surprise if some recycling facilities are reassessed in accordance with efficiencies.  However, I remain hopeful that core services will remain unaffected.

But its a reminder that the emphasis must also focus on the concept of pre-cycling and REDUCING the amount of unnecessary materials that end up in our bins in the first place.  As consumers, we have the power to make a personal switch from a disposable culture to reusable products, which can bring personal economic benefits as well as environmental gains.   Its also a good reason to bolster the "recycled market", by heightening our support for products that contain recycled materials and encourage companies and brands to switch to recycled components if they dont do so already.

A lot of progress has been made within the waste sector in the last few years and I still think there are many more exciting developments to come.  When I first started The Rubbish Diet, the standard statistic regarding food waste issued by the campaign site LoveFoodHateWaste was that the average household threw away one-third of its food.  In recent times Ive seen communications that claim that this has now reduced to a quarter. At the same time, food waste collections have been introduced in many parts of the country, using anaerobic digestion to divert such material from landfill. In time, these facilities will become even more widespread.

Elsewhere, the mixed plastics recycling market has received a further boost from WRAP to develop processing facilities in the UK and there are even real opportunities to manage previously hard-to-recycle items such as toothpaste tubes and other laminated packaging.   With regard to municipal waste, this really takes us one step closer to the goals of a zero waste society  and if youre as excited about this as me, then you should really check out Enval, the technology business behind the process.  Using pyrolysis, the company can demonstrate a proven commercial application for recovering 100% aluminium from packaging such as food pouches and other products.  The solution is also carbon neutral, using energy and fuel derived from the recycling process.

I may not blog about waste as much as I used to, but one things for certain,  raising awareness of waste reduction is still high on my agenda and is still a huge part of my many commitments.  And I can only thank all those who still take time out to read this blog, my random TwitterFacebook updates as well as those who come to my talks.  Id especially like to thank the members of the Ipswich Oddfellows group who invited me to talk at their meeting this week, offering me the opportunity to reminisce over those first few months of 2008 and how I tackled St Edmundsburys Zero Waste Week.  It was an appropriate way to celebrate this years anniversary.

So as we look forward to another year ahead, this might be an appropriate time to remind you that if youre looking for a challenge to do something about your rubbish, then please consider taking up The Rubbish Diet Challenge, which can help you tackle your rubbish in just 8 weeks.  Youll find the links to the FREE online guide at the top of this blog, as well as a few anecdotes to keep you entertained.  And if you need extra motivation, why not get friends and family to sponsor your challenge and do it for charity.

Just eight weeks.  Thats all it takes to make a huge difference.

Yes, just EIGHT WEEKS, to slim down your bin.

But be careful.  Once you delve into your rubbish, you could very well be hooked.... and you might just end up be talking about it for years!

Dont say I didnt warn you.
