National Zero Waste Week 2011 Just one week to go

Just like the kids starting a new school year, I cant believe that Zero Waste Week has come around so quickly or indeed that its in its fourth year.  It doesnt seem that long since Mrs Green at myzerowaste.com held the very first National Zero Waste Week back in 2008.

Back then, it felt like a huge challenge and I thought Id take a walk down memory lane to the preparations that Mrs Green was making for her very first ZWW three years ago.  I remember packaging being one of the key problems, as it still is for many people whod want to have a go today.  However, undeterred, Mrs Greens Zero Waste Week saw over 160 people pledge to increase their commitment to reducing waste, reusing, recycling or composting, providing a great platform for her Myzerowaste site to host its second National Zero Waste Week in 2009, encouraging supporters this time to tackle their food waste.

Last years Zero Waste Week returned with an even greater emphasis on food waste, with Mrs Greens campaign week gaining official support from celebrity chef Brian Turner CBE, who shared tips on how he uses up ingredients and how he composts while he cooks.   For me it was a great excuse to find my own local chef and hang out at one of my favourite eateries, picking up tips on how good food can go a lot further with some extra imagination and fabulous recipes.

And so to this year.  As ever, National Zero Waste Week 2011 comes with another waste-busting topic, with this years challenge "Reducing waste while away from home".   This theme holds a special significance for me as it was the same unexpected twist that came with the local councils ZWW challenge back in March 2008, where any waste that I created "on-the-go" had to be brought home and added to my rubbish bins booty, which would be declared later that week.   With such a personal challenge back then, is it any wonder that I get excited about the "recycle-on-the-go bins" that feature in the 1000 bins campaign.

So, what are we asking you to do this year?

Thats simple. Whilst getting on with reducing waste on the home front, Mrs Green and I would love you to become more aware of the rubbish that can be created whilst youre out and about and take measures to reduce such waste that would ordinarily end up in landfill.

From tackling disposable cutlery to recycling drinks containers, there are loads of tips over at the National Zero Waste Week 2011 information page, where you can also share your own ideas in the comments section.  If youre on Facebook and want to receive further news, theres also an event page, which already has 190 people attending.

Dont forget, National Zero Waste Week is also the finale of the 1000 bins photovideo challenge.  Thanks to all who have submitted photos and videos this far.  There are now only two weeks to go to submit your entries and be in with a chance of winning a gorgeous Luciana clutch bag from Bottletop.org, or a fabulous waste-busting goodie bag from Onya Bags, which includes an Onya Back, Onya Bag, Onya Lunch, Onya Weigh, H2O Bottle and a People Towel.

So please send in your entries by Midnight (GMT) 11 September, either at www.facebook.com/1000bins or email me directly at standup@therubbishdiet.co.uk.  Mrs Green and I will then get cracking on voting for the most interesting bin photo as well as the one that made us smile the most and will announce the winners as soon as weve stopped laughing.

Heres one of my own photos taken whilst out and about at a festival in Staffordshire....go on, surely you can do better...............

Monday Meeting The Rubbish Diet Challenge Wk 4

Welcome to Week 4 of The Rubbish Diet Challenge. I cant believe that already were almost half-way through. In one way, it feels like a hard slog, but in other ways, the times been whizzing along, and it will be Week 8 before we know it.

Sadly I didnt get a chance to publish the regular Friday Journal during Week 3, due to battling a cold and Wi-Fi failure, but did you spot the latest news from Sainsburys?  In a bid to help reduce food waste, their new labelling will now advise customers that they can freeze products right up to the Use By date, replacing outdated advice which instructed households to freeze on day of purchase. Thats great news and hopefully other supermarkets will follow and update their guidelines too.

By now, anyone taking part in The Rubbish Diet should have got to grips with their local recycling services, discovered the extra facilities that are available through local shops and have started thinking about what food waste really means to them.  New habits will be starting to fall into place and while these are put into practice, participants will be wondering what else they can possibly do, to cut down their landfill waste even further.

Well in the world of waste-busting antics, theres always that little something.

So are ready for Week 4?  If so, its time to grab your Marigolds and get cracking.

Week 4 is all about domestic chores. Sorry. Its never been my highlight either. Id much rather be creative around the house, having loads of fun rather than clearing it up.  But one has to be responsible and I soon realised that cleaning and clearing up needed my creativity too, especially  if I was going to commit to reducing my waste even further.  Some of the things I tested a few years ago fell by the wayside, but most of the changes have remained in place, saving bags full of waste and pockets full of cash, as youll see from some of the mini-challenges that are set for this week.  More information and background material can be found in the online guide that accompanies the challenges detailed below.

1. Reduce the burden.  This week its time to go through your kitchen cupboards and sort out the bad from the good.  Many cupboards will be bursting with cleaning products that have been bought as a result of impulse purchases, but end up sitting there gathering dust while households rely on a core number of products.  Recognise which ones work for you and promise not to succumb to temptation again. Promise to use up the spare products soon or give them away to friends or via Freecycle.  When buying cleaning products in future, look out for condensed products or consider using natural alternatives. These days, you can even buy microfibre cloths for many aspects of your household routine, which promise to scrub and buff up your surfaces without needing any chemicals at all.

2. Reuse all you can. Of course, this principle carries through the whole of The Rubbish Diet, but when it comes to cleaning and household chores, it is amazing how much waste can be reduced through replacing disposable and consumable products with reusable items. I used to spend a fortune on disposable wipes, paper towels and sponges until I switched to washable cleaning cloths and longer lasting washing up gear.  Equally, having switched to Eco-balls and more lately the Eco Egg, I have also saved hundreds of pounds on laundry powder, and this has helped slim our recycling bin too.  So, as you work through your household chores this week, think about changes that you could ease into your lifestyle and try giving them a go.

3.Recycle those empties.  Household cleaner or detergent bottles are now classed as one of the more widely-recyclable containers in the UK, which means they are collected by most local authorities. So, even if your council does not accept the wider variety of plastics, they may still collect these.  If you are not in the habit of recycling these bottles regularly and are still unsure if your local council takes them, you can check easily, by calling your local council or visiting the Recycle Now website.

4.Downsize your rubbish bin. If youve experienced a huge boon to your recycling activities since Week 1 along with a diminished amount of rubbish, its time to celebrate by reorganising your bin bags! Not only will this provide you with a physical sense of achievement, but it also creates a physical reminder amongst your household to keep on going.  If your actual kitchen recycling bin is smaller than your rubbish bin, try switching them around and make more space for your recycling. Another technique that you can try is to remove the rubbish bins from everywhere else in the house, or particular rubbish hotspots e.g. the home office, bathrooms or bedrooms to ensure that everything is brought to the kitchen for sorting to disposal.  Some councils also allow you to swap your large wheelie bin for a smaller one, just like Terry-Anna, one of our bin-slimmers from Ipswich, discovered a few weeks ago.

And of course on the subject of our bin-slimmers, todays the day for catching up with how they are getting on with their individual missions. Most of them will still have another week to go until their rubbish gets collected so as the results come in throughout the day, please note that many of these will be interim figures.

So how did I fare after 2 years

Wednesday, March 30, 2016

Well, the ultimate test of my willpower and ability to stay away from those pitfall foods and manage stress shows is evidenced in the photos.  Im at my heaviest - 214 - and am rejoining my Ottawa clinic on January 5th.

Enough is enough!

While I have tried to restart a few times, the last two years were very stressful and active.  I left my job to start my own consulting business, and also work in a very emotionally charged field of anti-human trafficking.  Suffice to say, having the luxury to spend a large amount of time for myself and on my personal health needs was not front and centre.

However, enough is enough.

I had to bag up all of my beautiful clothes that I purchased when I reached my previous goal weight of 140 lbs/Size 8/10, give them away and over the last 2 years, replenish my closet with 12, 14, 16, 18 and the odd size 20 items.  It was heart breaking.  I was just elated when I bought gorgeous clothes from JCrew - received compliments from friend, family and colleagues - but it vanquished as quickly as it came.  Within 8 months I went from a 140 to 155.  Within 10 months to 165.  Within 12 months to 180.  And now, two years later, 214.  Holy s%&^*!

No - this is not me...
Even more depressing was trying to find a dress and look that is true to me for my nieces recent wedding.  My dress was a comfortable Size 20, but as I am my own biggest critic, it looked like a Macys moomoo with glitz and glam to deflect attention from my 40DD bust and wide-load butt.

In true form, the clinic made a courtesy call prior to Christmas to let me know that I still had a 2-week credit in my file.  I told them Id be in on Monday, January 5th at 9:00 a.m..

As my children are now 14 and 9 years old, my eldest is joining me for 3x weekly exercise and fitness activities as he is a fitness enthusiast, and my 9-year old aspiring Cordon Bleu chef will be helping me prepare and stay on track with my meals.

I learned a lot of tips and tricks the last go-round, so I know what works for me in the loss department.  Now, once I regain my goal weight, I will need to stop thinking that I can be left to my own devices and get serious about that slippery slope of sugar, carbs, alcohol and portion sizes for my metabolism.

Ive lost 2.5 decades to obesity and regret.  I think this year, for every pound I need to lose, Ill need some physical and ceremonial activity to free the fat back to their home - and not feel this sense of ownership to weight, obesity and regret.

This will be a real test of mental and lifestyle shift.

Heres to 2015.  By May 13th (my 47th birthday) I WILL be back to my 140 amazing weight.  A body remembers - I remember - so this is my personal pledge and resolution.

So here we go.

Do I regret having to be back here, starting from scratch again to relive (and reinvest) in losing unwanted pounds and reclaiming my healthy natural frame?  Yes - Im also chagrined.  However, thats life and my lessons learned.

H.

Grey Rileys Giving Bucket

Well, to start this off, were going to re-awaken something we started last year. Itll be a good thing to start with because itll continue throughout the year. We have kinda neglected it over the summer. Our "giving bucket" is a tall tupperware that we keep in the kitchen. Each time we go to the grocery store, Greyson and Riley pick one thing to add to the "giving bucket." Either a box of Macaroni, Ramen noodle, a canned fruti or vegetable, ect...They are in charge of putting it in the bucket while I put away groceries in the kitchen. When the bucket gets full, well take it to a food pantry, church or to someone who needs it.
We talked about this at the dinner table last night and it kept Greyson talking for a while. Who needs this food...lead to conversations of us being so thankful that we have a kitchen full of food each day, that our Daddy has a job so we can go to the store....then that lead to how thankful we are to have a home and not be homeless. We talked about how we couldnt imagine not having a warm, dry house to live in this week with the CONSTANT rain lately! Greyson said, "Well, we just need to go out and find all the houses that nobody wants to buy and give it to the homeless people to live in together. Then when we run out of those houses, well get the worker people to build them some houses."
I sure wish we could let all the 4 year olds solve the problems in our world...the solutions really should be as easy as they see it!

"A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor."

SOUP/BROTH

I was making myself broth everyday in the first couple of weeks for some extra substance, but with the salt, it was holding back progress.

SO, since there are things that youre allowed on the diet, if you have a tendency to retain water, then just stay away from it.

Mothers for other mothers please help all you can this Mothers Day

Natasha Kaplinksy, one of the supporters of the Missing Midwives campaign

I really wish you could have been in the room with me yesterday.

I attended Save the Childrens press conference for the launch of its Missing Midwives report, a report that highlights the discrepancies around the world in something so natural as childbirth and the deaths that occur, simply by not having the necessary healthcare or education available.

I know this subject is "off topic" for a blog that normally discusses waste, but poverty is another issue about which I am very passonate and I believe that in many ways the subjects are connected simply through the imbalances that exist between the wealth of developed countries and the poverty of the under-developed world.  Yesterdays event certainly highlighted these contrasts.

Just before the press conference started, I had an unexpected opportunity to interview broadcast journalist Natasha Kaplinksy, who is one of the high profile supporters adding their voice to the campaign.  I asked her to tell me more about the issues and what ordinary people like me can do.

Natasha began by introducing the most appalliing statistic that around the word 1000 women and 2000 babies die every single day, for what she describes as "for just the want of a bit of extra bit help".  She went on to highlight the fact that at birth, there exists the greatest contrast between the developed and under-developed world in that just 1% of women in the uk give birth alone compared to 94% in countries such as Ethiopia.  Perhaps the most startling statistic of all was that in Rwanda 400,000 babies born every year yet there are only 46 midwives across the whole country.  By contrast in the UK there are 26,825 working midwives helping to support 749,000 births per annum. Now thats a statistic that makes me feel lucky.

As a mother of  two children delivered safely by health professionals in the UK, of which one was a very long and complex birth, I cant even imagine what it must be like facing childbirth without any medical support.  However, having attended yesterdays conference, I can now see how something that is such a joyous occasion for many women and their families could easily be described as a death sentence for many more.  And experts such as the Royal College of Midwives Frances Day-Stirk, are calling for action and education to make more midwives and healthcare professionals available worldwide and to tackle the Millennium Development Goals that are committed to reducing both child and maternal mortality

Frances Day-Stirk, Vice-President of the International Confederation of Midwives
and Director of Learning, Royal College of Midwives.

The message that came through yesterday, which was really loud and clear, was that the solutions that need to be put in place arent complex and as a global society we can make a difference.

Justin Forsyth, Chief Executive of Save the Children UK said,

“We are calling on rich and poor country governments to put health workers at the heart of their plans. World leaders pledged to do just that last year, but now they need to deliver the funds and political will to support this pledge. Without it, mums and babies will continue to die needlessly every day.”

As I listened to the tales of those who had visited some of the countries that need help, I could understand how such action could make a real impact, whether its training more midwives to help with births or providing mothers with home-birth kits that include something simple as a sterilised razor blade to cut their own umbilical chord without risk of infection.  Yes, many new mothers really have to do such a thing and a clean blade can make a huge difference to reducing the child and maternal mortality rates.

Justin Forsyth, CEO Save the Children, Natasha Kaplinsky, Dervla Kirwan and Midwife Suzanne
describe their visits to affected countries that need better healthcare provision.

Returning to my initial interview with Natasha Kaplinksy, as our family puts in place arrangements to celebrate Mothers Day tomorrow, its her words that strike a real chord with how that fits into our global society. And thats "That we remember how lucky we are and that we can make a difference. We can all make a difference, by making small changes to our lives we can save other peoples lives.  Its such a small thing they need."

She also added, "The statistics blur the reality because they are so huge, but if we think about helping one person at a time, that really does make a difference. We just need to remember that a mother in any of those countries loves their child as much as we do and every mother wants the best for their child".

And thats what really caught in my throat. I cant speak for anyone else, but when I see those awful images on TV, I just see tragic pictures of suffering thats so immense it seems beyond our control and so far away.  However if it were our friends or family that suffered the same lack of care, wed be able to kick up much more of a fuss.

But I do feel optimistic that as individuals we can enable change and Im saying this not to just readers from the UK but to visitors I know who come from across the world too.

Of course, Save the Children offices around the globe will always value any fundraising initiatives and donations that can support urgent causes like this, especially as for every £100 raised it means a midwife can be trained.  However, they would also value any part you can play in raising the issue with your own government representatives too. With the United Nations summit taking place this September, your voice can help world leaders to pledge their political will and the funds to go with it, raising the profile of this issue when it comes to money that might already be ringfenced for development aid.  Emailing your MP, Senator or whatever their official title may be, is a simple action that most of us can do, as well as sharing relevant links on Facebook and Twitter to spread awareness amongst our friends online.

But Ive only been able to share a tiny glimpse here.  For more details, you really should take a look at the Save the Children website, where there is much more information about the Mothers for Other Mothers campaign as well as a full copy of the Missing Midwives report.

And to see the inspirational impact that Save the Children has, please do watch this video. In a world so large, investment in 350,000 midwives shouldnt be beyond our international capabilities, should it?

Bayer Ketostix reagent strips for urinalysis.Image via Wikipedia

When you go in for your thrice-weekly weigh-in and needle-pokefest, your urine gets scrutinzed at the same time.

Its actually a little fun - you get instant feedback on whether youre burning that flab and how high your engine is running.

Now, I usually eat breakfast around 7 a.m - protein first, some fruit, coffee, pills/potassium and a large glass of my lemon/Splenda/water potion. It gives me a full belly, lots of energy, and a full bladder by the time I reach the clinic.

My regular 8 a.m. weigh-in usually requires a morning urine sample. I just bypass the sign-in and head to the ladies room.

Now, you usually need to provide a Monday and Wednesday Morning Urine (MU) sample; occasionally the nurses will request a Friday Evening Urine (EU) sample. Samples should be taken one (1) hour after eating. Hence, my pit stop upon reaching the clinic is perfect timing.

I dont come from a medical background, and am the furthest removed possible from the profession in my day-to-day career, so I listen quite intently when ketosis - or the Krebs Cycle - is explained to me. Do I understand it? Only to the point where the doctor rationalizes that it is the 4-hour separation between eating the protein that fuels the 8-enzyme chain process to burn the fat... Sounds good to me.

Now, the purpose of the urine exploration phase of the diet is quite interesting to me. Im no lab tech, but to see science in action for me is, well, fun.

At each visit, the urine sample youve lovingly safeguarded or just produced, is tested using a reagent strip for urinalysis. (Translation for the layman: its like a little paper dipstick with colour squares that change depending on the intel your urine is about to impart.) For those who have experienced such scientific miracles, its like the pregnancy test stick, but this time the pink indicator means something a little bit different...!

Well, little did I know, but you can purchase these strips for your own home use...because I just cant get enough of the scientific fun, and I feel compelled to check my fat burning machine on a regular (daily, sometimes twice daily) need-to-know basis.

There are two types of strips my clinic uses: the regular weekly ketone strip (to measure only your level of fat burn) or a monthly comprehensive strip that lights up like a rainbow, decoding a wide variety of secrets such as sugar levels and any number of medical facts about you.

I really only care about the keytones. I run between a 1-4, with 1 being the lowest, but still evidencing a burn of fat, to 4 being the home fires are raging!

Now, since Ive taken such an interest in my new found keytones/fat burning process, I purchased my own personal supply of reagent strips for some mad science experiments. However, I bought them during the week that I mistakenly bought the sugar-laden applesauce, which halted my fat-burning. I didnt know that I was eating "evil food" at the time, but the strips didnt lie. I just wasnt sure what was happening: the strips kept showing a negative reading.

I was perplexed: I was burning consistently from Day 1 of the diet, and often quite high every week previously, so why werent these strips working?

Duds, I thought. $16 down the drain...

It turns out though, that strips work just fine. I tested them again over the course of the week, after my body was cleansed from the sugar interlopers, and Im consistently burning (1,2 or 4 and losing.)

Whew! Science in action...

So, if you want to check your keytones, go to your neighbourhood pharmacy (or one of the larger chains) and ask for Bayer Keto-Diastix. Its $16 for 100 strips, and you too can create scientific magic without waiting for your next weigh-in. Between 15 and 30 seconds (the results are only good for a very short time!) you can track the ebb and flow of your 8-enzyme chain and keytone process.

Happy testing!

Some Love for the SPCA

Every time that commercial comes on with Sarah Mclachlan singing....Greyson stops in his tracks and hes glued to the TV. If that song, In the Arms of the Angels, comes on the radio...he always says, "Mom, this is that commercial about people that dont take care of their animals." This week, we went to visit some dogs and cats right now the street from us. I had no idea until I googled it, that there was a Second Chance SPCA shelter just 5 minutes from us. Id read that any old towels, blankets, sheets and pillows can be donated to the shelters to make the crates a little cozier and warmer for the animals. So, we cleaned out our linen closet and found that we had quite a bit that we could take to those sweet little animals in need of some love!

Paleo Its so easy a Caveman could do it!

The Original Paleolithic diet, was designed, as the name implies, to mimic the diets of our Paleolithic ancestors, who lived up until about 10,000 years ago, when modern agriculture began. It is based on the premise that, while our food technology has improved since the advent of agriculture, our bodies have been a little slow to catch up. We are better suited to the longstanding hunter-gatherer diet. The Paleolithic era lasted approximately 2.5 million years, it is theorized that during that time, hominids had sufficient time to adapt to the evolutionary pressures of the hunter-gatherer diet, and since then, weve had too little time to re-adapt to an agricultural diet.

Basically, you are physiologically designed to eat like a caveman or nomad, even if you no longer know it.

According to Dr. Cordains version of Paleo, there are six main premises to follow during the diet, all of which have roots in the ancient hunter-gatherer diet :

here is a link to the theory behind the rules

Unfortunately, these premises, while helpful, leave open a bit too much room for interpretation. Where does my favorite food in the world, coffee, stand in all of this? Is roasting considered processed? What about salt? Or honey? Different versions of Paleo cut these grey areas in different ways, and in the end, its really up to you. Unlike Atkins, there is not exhaustive list of what to eat and not to eat on Paleo, and no hard and fast rules concerning carbohydrates either.

However, on her website ( here ) Dr. Cordain expounds a bit more on the rules of Paleo. As far as carbohydrates go, the theory is that you should obtain 35 - 45% of your daily caloric intake from carbohydrates, 20 - 35% from protein sources, and the remainder in mono and polyunsaturated fats. (Fats which are liquid at room temperature) For contrast, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, makers of the infamous MyPlate and Food Pyramid, generally recommend a 45-60% carbs, 15-30% protein breakdown.

The best way, in my opinion, to calculate the number of grams of carbohydrate you should be eating on Paleo is thus :

Begin with an estimate of the calories you consume in a day  [for me its about 1800-2200 Cal/day]

Then multiply by the percent of calories you should obtain from carbs [ lets start with 35%]

1800 Cal (0.35) = 630 Cal from carbs

Then using the generally accepted calories to grams exchange,* 4 Cals / 1 gram of carbohydrate, we find the number of grams of carbohydrates we should consume :

630 Cal  ( 1 gram / 4 Cal) = 157.5 grams

This means that if you consume about 1800 Calories in a day, 630 of them should come from carbohydrates, which means you should consume approximately 157.5 grams of carbohydrate in a day. (booyah algebra!) After three weeks on 45 grams or less a day, this seems like a lot to me, but in comparison to the average western diet, this is actually quite low.

Now you may be wondering how all of this translates into a very real, everyday kind of life. I began this morning on my first day of Paleo with a fruit smoothie made with coconut milk and strawberries, a hard boiled egg, and a cup of coffee. I feel a bit guilty about the coffee considering it toes the line in the grey area of Paleo, but I just love it too much to give it up completely. What I have promised myself is this, I will have only the one morning cup, and the rest of the day will consist of tea to get me through. Seems fair enough.

The other thing which was different this morning is that, for the first time, I am not alone in my crazy scheme. My mother has decided to join me on Paleo in the hopes of kickstarting her currently flagging weight loss. Unlike me, my mom is not pesce-octo-lavo-vegetarian, (means I eat fish, eggs and dairy) and will be able to better eat the full range of Paleolithic foods. Hopefully, Paleo can do for her what it purports, and it will be wonderful to have a compatriot in my diet experiment. Time to get down with our caveman roots!

Clutter be gone! I now need a blimmin rest

Monday, March 28, 2016

Well thatll teach me to be more careful with my money and all the stuff that comes into our home from impulse buys and random gifts.

My arms feel like theyre ready to drop off.  My feet detached themselves hours ago and my back is distinctively telling me that it is still there.  And it is never pleasant when ones back muscles begin to heckle!

Today was the day that the big event finally arrived.  The Big Huge Summer Declutter organised by BBC Radio Suffolk and EACHs Treehouse Appeal to raise money for a new childrens hospice.  My goal was to turn up alongside 600 other participants to lay out my pitch at the biggest car boot sale that Ive ever experienced.

I know many people love car boots sales, but personally I have never particularly warmed to them.  Its the early starts and bargaining over 10p here and 5p there that truly test my patience.  So today really had to be worth the effort, which is why I pledged to donate all the proceeds of our pitch to the Treehouse Appeal.

Of course I could have just donated our unwanted stuff to the charity shop.  That would have been much easier than getting up at the crack of dawn and sitting in a traffic jam in Ipswich, before being rained on and sunburnt within a matter of hours.  But that wouldnt have given me the lesson that I very much needed today, which was the kick up the backside in discovering the real value of  the stuff with which I - along with the help of others - have been cluttering up our home over the last decade.

And yes, its no coincidence that the amount of clutter weve accumulated is in direct relation to having had two young children. Most parents will recognise the routine:  birthdays; rainy days; hobbies; keep them happy days; boring days; cheer-up days; keep-up-with-the-Jones days; guilty days and Christmas. Then theres all the stuff they make at schools and clubs.  But the more one acquires, the harder it is to keep on top of, especially when the kids really love their belongings or you dont want to offend someone by selling or giving away an unwanted present, or if youve paid a huge amount of money for something that is no longer needed or wanted.  Then theres the case of not having time to keep on top of your stuff until it begins to cripple your free space and your sanity!

Although many might regard car boot sales as a celebration of reuse, I cant help see them as a cathedral to discards and obsolescence.  The setting is perfect for the average buyer, as there are plenty of bargains galore with the opportunity to snap up essentials and luxuries for great prices.  However, for the seller, its a wake-up call to see something that once cost £25 -  and which remains in perfect condition and still in trend - disappear into the distance for just 50p.

Dont get me wrong, Ive not got any gripes over such transactions.  Its certainly not the buyers fault that I was daft enough to pay through the nose for something Ive hardly used and I really quite like seeing people enjoy their bargains.  If I was that bothered about recovering the cost Id opt for eBay. And it has to be said, that convenience-wise, if youre missing the organisation gene like me, the advantage of car-boot sales is that a whole load of stuff can be taken off your hands within a matter of hours without the effort of nipping backwards and forwards to the post office.

No, the lesson from today was to continue to be mindful of the impact of every acquisition that comes into our home, whether its bought brand-new or as cheap bargains, or even gifted or donated.  Even if something is free, it can still  remain under-used and unappreciated and left to age in a drawer waiting to be dealt with.  In such instances, Id be better off overcoming my clutter bug nature and declining freebies, letting others put them to good use instead.  Likewise, with clothes and books being my particular weakness, its perhaps time to reconsider what I really do actually need.

However, with all that said, Im pretty pleased that all those presents weve bought ourselves or have been given to us by friends and family, were today converted into the princely sum of £75, which will help EACH build its much needed hospice.  If Id just donated the items to the charity shop, Id have no idea of their worth and their contribution to the fundraising goal, but at least now I know we have helped to pay for a few more bricks or some furniture.

So for someone who doesnt normally do boot sales, this was a real worthwhile day indeed.  And even better, theyll get more cash from the remaining stuff that hadnt sold, which we left at their collection point on the way home.

Now thats what I call a useful car boot sale!

And the satisfaction of leaving with a virtually empty boot.  Now that is totally priceless.

Huge thanks to my very own King of Declutter, Mr A, and our two helpful children today.  Its thanks to their contribution that we were able to make this happen.

Making 2020 Zero Waste Work Coventry Conference

Professor Paul Connett, presenting at the Coventry conference

Today, representatives from central government, local authorities and universities gathered together in Coventry along with social enterprises, mulitnationals, waste management companies, the third sector and environmental bodies, to explore how UK society can create a proper zero waste economy in line with aspirations for 2020.

For many, zero waste translates as zero waste to landfill, but a strong message that was made clear at todays conference was that a zero waste goal should be exactly what it says...simply ZERO waste, achieved through innovations that design out waste during manufacture and a society that promotes reuse and technologies that enable precious resources to be properly recycled rather than the assumption that the simplest destination for residual waste is to be burned with no other opportunity for recovery.

Anyone who has any doubts over whether this zero waste vision could become a reality, should consult with American waste campaigner Professor Paul Connett, pictured above, who presents a strong case for product redesign, economic incentives, community empowerment and the development of separation & research facilities at landfillincineration sites, as being vital components in making it work.

And the key to success is everyone in the chain working together to drive the results forward, an example of which was announced in Coventry today, where Coventry University, which already runs 50 courses in sustainability and the environment, revealed plans to create a Zero Waste research centre, working closely with the local authority.

Todays programme also presented examples of industrys approach to creating zero waste through manufacturing processes and facilities management as well as examplers of community-based programmes and waste stream development.

The presentation by Garden Organics Myles Bremner particularly struck a chord, as it was one of the strongest case studies  for how individuals can make a difference, not only regarding reducing their own waste, but by empowering their communities.  Through the Master Composter scheme, Garden Organics has been successful in creating a peer-to-peer network, where members of the public are able to help others, by sharing their expertise locally.

Of course I couldnt leave the conference without highlighting my strong belief that a similar peer-to-peer network is needed to nurture recycling champions across the UK, where trusted and enthusiastic members of the community are empowered to share their knowledge through local groups and at key events.  Social-networking has already demonstrated the power of word-of-mouth. If this could be replicated throughout local communiities, this greater awareness could bring beneficial results to not just recycling rates but to waste arisings too.

Although this event was organised independently of National Zero Waste Week, it was a welcome coincidence and well-timed for this weeks calendar.  It would have been news to most of those who attended todays conference that this week is indeed the 4th national awareness week of its kind.   And with reference to my earlier point about community champions, National Zero Waste Week, as organised by Rachelle Strauss of MyZeroWaste is an excellent example of how a positive role model can engage with the community around them, allbeit a virtual one.  With over 12,000 visitors to the campaign page, it certainly has proven its wide reach.

The Rt Hon Caroline Spelman MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs was in attendance today and stayed for a short while following her keynote speech.  Although the government is placing waste prevention high on its agenda and has created a path towards a zero waste economy, todays  conference demonstrated that it needs to work harder and be tougher on manufacturing to design out waste and solutions for maximising the waste that remains.  I hope that government now shifts its expectations to fit more closely in line with the visionaries we saw today, who are passionate about better use of the worlds resources and the socio-economic opportunities of managing them more effectively.

Mal Williams, CEO of the Welsh community recycling network Clych, who also spoke at todays conference, really couldnt have put the point more bluntly.

"Waste is a mistake, not a resource," he asserted and referring to how society goes forward, he added that it is time to move from a "Careless system to a CAREFUL system".

And I have to agree, this should be the barometer against which a sustainable zero waste strategy should be measured and judged.

Tom Hunt and The Forgotten Feast

Tom Hunt, the creator of the Forgotten Feast.
Thankfully its not just householders standing by their rubbish bins at home who focus hard on food waste, there are plenty of unsung heroes in the catering sector who are tackling the issue head-on too, combatting much wider problems than we have on the home-front.  Given the challenges of Week 3 of The Rubbish Diet, I thought it quite timely to introduce a fabulous idea, known as the Forgotten Feast thats about to hit London by storm.

The Forgotten Feast is a new restaurant concept organised by Tom Hunt, (chef at waste awareness events Feeding5k and FOE), created specifically to highlight the 20 million tonnes of annual food wastage that exists within our society. Whether it’s fresh fish thrown back into the sea, vegetables ignored for being too ugly, or unusual cuts of meat simply discarded, the Forgotten Feast is making a clear and public declaration against waste

Having started in Autumn 2011, in partnership with food charity FareShare, the restaurant idea focuses on rescuing large quantities of unwanted food, that would otherwise go to waste, and turning it into luxurious feasts. Using wild and seasonal foods, wasted foods, and foods ignored by the modern world, Tom creates a stunning new menu for each occasion based on the ingredients he is provided with.

I like the fact that this is no greenwashed endeavour. The careful planning and underlying dedication and philosophies will ensure that everything from the location, to the furniture to the food, to the zero waste recycling policy will be sustainable, ultimately highlighting the waste and excess in our society and encouraging those in the food chain to do something about it.

The Forgotten Feast is officially launching this weekend, with a Valentines spectacular at FareShares depot in Bermondsey, providing a banquet of food for diners to enjoy.  FareShare rescues surplus food year round and delivers it to local charities all over the country and every ticket sold will enable the charity to provide an additional 80 meals for the hungry and vulnerable people they support, thanks to grant-giving charity StreetSmart who are generously matching the number of meals raised though ticket sales.

Tickets are currently available for dinner Friday 10th FebruarySaturday 11thSunday 12th (late lunch) and include 3 courses, a drink and canapés.

More information can be found at the Toms Feast website or by contacting info@tomsfeast.com.  And if you happen to be unavailable for this weekend, but would like to attend others, follow @tomsfeast on Twitter for future updates.

My mission now is to entice Tom to Suffolk.  Were such a foodie county, and Id love to have a Forgotten Feast here for us rural folk to enjoy.
