Celebrating the launch of The Rubbish Diet in Shropshire

Meet Ali, my new partner in grime from Shrewsbury. Well, I say grime what I really mean is striving for lighter, cleaner bins throughout Shropshire.

Ali Thomas is the driving force behind the launch of the Rubbish Diet challenge in Shropshire. Organised by Ali and Katy Anderson, as a Transition Shrewsbury project, the challenge was announced on Thursday to a room full of local residents who are now set to slim their bins before Christmas.

The Shropshire project will be based on the Internet-based Rubbish Diet 2012 challenge, which I ran earlier this year and I will be working closely with Ali to develop resources and processes that can be tailored to help empower the local community.

The households, which are taking up the challenge over the next few weeks, will play a vital role in helping to gather research on local waste issues and waste-reduction opportunities, supporting the next phase of the project, which will be launched in the new year.

It really is an exciting time for the development of the Rubbish Diet into the wider community and its great timing that this is being rolled out in Shropshire now, supporting the recent news that Shropshire council has recently launched a mixed plastics collection.  Naturally, there will be challenges for the residents, as cardboard is no longer collected from the kerbside, but Transition Shrewsbury is already prepared for that and will be re-running its successful Cardboard Christmas campaign that took place last year.

The Rubbish Diet Shropshire project already has its own blog, where Ali will be posting regular advice and updates.  You can also follow the latest news on Twitter, via @RDShropshire

If you know anyone in Shrewsbury, or Shropshire, who would love to get involved with this exciting challenge, please forward these details, so they can get in touch. If you are interested in running a similar challenge in your own community, I also would love to hear from you. Email enquiries@therubbishdiet.co.uk.

Rubbish pleasures Can you find happiness in reducing waste

Ive been pondering lately.

Im not sure why I need to qualify it with lately.  Im always pondering.  Pondering is something I continuously do.

And the thing thats got my braincells sparking this time is the subject of happiness and how more and more people who we nudge along through The Rubbish Diet are expressing a real sense of pleasure at the end of it.

The family that I helped in last years Throwaway Britain documentary captured this perfectly, when discussing their slimmed bin:

"When you lift it up to see such a little bag after two weeks its absolutely a joy." said Graham Heap, whose family took the challenge to reduce their waste in just two weeks. He added "I never ever thought that the size of my rubbish bags would put a smile on my face."

I raised this point recently at a TEDx talk that I gave at Cambridge University earlier this month.  My talk was about how as individuals we have the power to revolutionise waste.  Helping to innovate the economy through recycling more, supporting our local communities by paying more attention to reuse opportunities and how when we focus on reducing whats left in our bin, our creativity excels in finding new solutions to abate waste.

And I ended with Grahams quote, whose family had to quickly develop new routines, embed whole new habits and reorganise their recycling very differently in order to reduce their waste so drastically.  For many, that would seem a total palaver.  Yet for the Heaps, the positive results and personal successes outweighed any former perceived hassles.

The Heaps arent the first to express such surprise pleasure at reducing their waste so drastically.  Id felt the immense rewards myself back in 2008 after I did that Zero Waste Week and there will be many others who had done so beforehand too.

But its only recently that Ive started thinking about this feel-good factor in more depth and its an area that Id like to understand more.  For six years Ive been talking rubbish and helping people take steps to reduce their waste and Im going to carry on doing that.  However, where I was once just happy with the results of peoples Rubbish Diet endeavours, the more I witness individuals and community success stories, the more intrigued I am to understand some of the science behind these unexpected rubbish pleasures.

What really drives people like myself to strive towards a massive waste reduction target during a Zero Waste Week?

Is it because we are natural goal-seekers who love beating targets?  Is it because we feel accountable to whoever has set the challenge?  Is it that fantastic feeling when we exceed our own expectations?  Is it the surprise that we discover in ourselves or possibly the innovation beyond our bins that captures our imaginations?

Perhaps its the positive sense of well-being brought by being an active part of the waste solution after years of being part of the problem?  Perhaps its the joy of saving money that we would have once thrown away as rubbish in our bins?  Or perhaps its enjoying our belongings for much much longer?

I know for one thing, there is an amazing sense of satisfaction in not having to put out the rubbish bin so often.  And there lies a happy moment at its simplest.

From practical reasons to those that are more difficult to define and reach, I know that everyones level of pleasure will be different and will be dependent on their individual motivation.

So, if youre happy to share your story and discuss with me your own experience about how it feels having reduced your waste, Id love to hear from you, either through the comments below or by email.

Equally, if your experience has led to opposing feelings, Id love to explore these too.  Im now crossing my fingers that taking The Rubbish Diet hasnt resulted in a household rift or - heaven help us - a divorce!!!

And if youve never done The Rubbish Diet before and fancy testing out some rubbish pleasures of your own, you could sign up to the challenge here.   But dont expect it to be a totally easy ride. Most people have various hurdles they have to overcome, many of which are often beyond our control.

Maybe thats the true source of rubbish pleasure.  In beating down those barriers, whatever they might be.

Well, there was no chocolate for me, but the roses from hubby was great. I met my 2 week goL, but I couldnt resist the Friday night evening with friends. Dont tell, but I imbibed in some wine and some nibblies. Though it was highly satisfying, it took 2 days to get back into ketosis. Argghhhh.

Im back swinging though.

I picked up a new veggie steamer. I prefer it to using the Ziploc steamer bags now.

A hairy situation Part II

Wednesday, April 13, 2016

Okay - Ive been nervous about the thinning hair experience I had in my last major go-round.  So, Ive pulled out the NIOXIN and have started using it again.

Ive been feeling a slight thinning texture to my hair.  After one-week though, this stuff seems to be combating the problem and helping add volume and thickness to my hair.

Is it stimulating hair growth?  Im not sure - but hopefully its staving off hair loss.  That would not be good...
No - this is not me, but is a Nioxin client.

I learned about this product from my hairdresser who was also a Bernstein client years ago and recommended Nioxin.  She swears by it.  Little did I know that rapid weight loss causes hair thinning.  According to the Nioxin website (see http://nioxin.com/en-US/the-causes-and-the-facts-page.aspx?id=236)
"What you eat can play a significant role in hair thinning. A high consumption of animal fats, rapid weight loss and liquid protein diets can result in a lack of amino acids, biotin, iron, protein and zinc — all of which are essential for healthy-looking hair."
There are many other factors that can contribute to thinning hair, but hey, a 20lb per month drop is an inevitable contributor.

This stuff is not cheap though - the Scalp Therapy, Cleanser and Scalp Treatment (the triumvirate of power for follicle stimulation) is around $50 (if memory serves.)

The triumverate of power
Its a pleasant concoction though - tea tree oil, peppermint and other "stuff" makes it alright.  Its not too medicinal, but I do ad a little bit of leave-in conditioner to soften my hair.  Otherwise my hair feels a little like straw.

So, if you wish to help stave off any rapid hair loss along with your rapid weight loss, I highly recommend this product.

And sorry to the blessed soul who read my original post way-back-when and asked where to purchase this product.  I didnt have the comments linked to my email, so I never responded.  Mea culpa - how bad is that for a blogger!

I bought this at my salon in Gatineau, but please excuse my ignorance - it may be available in stores and online, but Im not sure.  http://nioxin.com/en-US/salon-finder-page.aspx  Heres a link to the salon finder to see wheres sold in a salon near you.

Heres to showering with a friend!  Get your mind out of the gutter people...I mean Nioxin.  *pfft*

Would you like to live more sustainability but need a helping hand from an experienced old drama queen? Maybe youre an eco-minded blogger who wants a great excuse to offer even more inspiration to your readers in 2011.

If this sounds like you and you fancy making your mark on creating a more sustainable society, please consider giving bonkers old Baglady a place in your home for 2011. To put it frankly, shes been hanging around here for much of 2010 and its about time I moved her on. She wont take up much of your time I promise and in good olde Irish tradition, you can kick her out and send her on her way after youve helped her out a bit and when shes finished the washing up!

Baglady, aka environmental film-maker Shirley Lewis, hails from Northern Ireland and has pledged to help individuals and communities to live ASAP, i.e, As SUSTAINABLY as Possible. In her inimitable style she has been busy sorting out her local MPs and in 2011 shes planning on chatting up some more. In readiness shes collecting as many personal pledges as possible to take to her local assembly in June 2011 to help influence government policy and encourage politicians everywhere to take the lead in their own communities.  So she really needs your help!

What can you do?

Its very easy and wont take much time at all, no matter where in the world you are. Just spend a couple of minutes visiting Bagladys website and pledge to Take Up an idea that is sustainable and Give Up doing something in your life that isnt. Christmas is a great time to reflect on this and the new year is the perfect opportunity to set yourself some new goals and the children can get involved too.

There are also other ways in which you can help in the new year.  Bagladys campaign Round 2 ASAP is being officially launched by her PR company on 11/1/11 but she is an impatient old bag and wants to get the party started sooner than that. Well she is 590 million years old and has waited long enough, so who could blame her.

So if you are a blogger who would like to join Baglady in her SECRET INTERNET LAUNCH, sign up now! Taking place between 1st-10th January, all you need to do is blog about your own ASAP pledge and invite a few friends to do the same and help keep her going. Itll be fabulous to see how far shell end up before she needs to be back in Northern Ireland on June 21st.

Oh I love nothing better than a super duper secret launch party. If you would like to be involved as an ASAP Secret Launch blogger, please email me at karen[at]therubbishdiet[dot]co[dot]uk and Ill be happy to send out the official press release and blog badge and answer any questions that you might have.

So please lets not waste this Christmas: ADOPT BAGLADY FOR 2011 TODAY!

BritMums Live! A glimpse at blogging for the greater good

Tuesday, April 12, 2016

The Blogging for the Greater Good panel at Britmums Live with Camila Batmanghelidjh - Kids Company, blogger Kylie Hodges, Claire Hazelgrove - ONE.org, Polly Gowers - Give as you Live and blogger Kate Davis-Holmes

If you havent been introduced to BritMums yet, I urge you to listen up and take note.

This weekend, the online community, formerly known as British Mummy Bloggers, gathered together for BritMums Live, a high-profile conference with over 500 delegates in attendance, attracting members from all parts of the country and with a diverse range of personal stories and blogging achievements.

Bloggers, old and new, listened to inspirational talks from blogging peers, as well as a range of celebrities from the more traditional media world.  Well-known bloggers such as Antonia Chitty, Julia Boggio and Kate Davis-Holmes, sharing programme time with some of the nations well-known faces including Sarah Brown, Cherry Healey, Eleanor Mills, Katy Hill and Ruby Wax.  The topics were just as extensive, from experiences with depression to finding your voice, photography, publishing, video blogging, beginners tips, advanced tips, work loglife balance, food and blogging for happiness.  And the great thing was, it didnt matter about any individuals background, whether it was journalism, TV or blogging, being a speaker or a member of the audience, the atmosphere felt very much a level playing field.

One of the key messages to emerge from the conference was how influential bloggers have become and the evidence was pretty clear, with major names such as TK Maxx, Crocs, Panasonic, Lego, Warner Bros and Butlins being present on the day as sponsors. Brands are keen as ever to win over online voices, using modern-day word-of-mouth to share news of their latest products, through blogging platforms and micro-blogging such as Twitter.

But its not just about manufacturers and retailers getting buy-in. In recent years, there has been an increased trend in bloggers standing up for their passions and working in partnership with the third-sector, raising the profile of charities and key issues.  For example, many of the BritMums community have already voiced support for PiggyBankKids, a charity founded by Sarah Brown, that helps vulnerable babies and children.  PiggyBankKids presence at the conference spoke volumes, as did the fact that fundraising enabler Give as You Live was the events key sponsor, highlighting how online shoppers can raise money for their favourite charity at no extra cost to themselves.

At the Blogging for Greater Good discussion, members of the panel - pictured above - highlighted the power of bloggers in profiling good causes and reinforced the point that charities dont necessarily need bloggers donations, its the blogging that is most important, encouraging support from online followers, as well as friends and families.  Its very much about sharing the personal stories that people have to tell that can connect closely to a specfic cause.

Whether as individuals or a a group, blogging seems to be entering a new era,  It was mentioned on more than one occasion how professionals within traditional media have been turning to bloggers and Twitter to source stories, topical commentary as well as content for programmes and new TV formats.  My own experience can already testify to that, having had several opportunities to contribute towards and influence production content for a range of local radio broadcasts, national radio and a TV documentary.  It now seems to come with the territory and as been something thats taken some time for me to get used to.

Four years ago, it felt like wading in jelly to justify myself as a blogger but things have since changed and both BritMums Live and the recently-held Cybher demonstrated that many other bloggers have noticed the changes.

So, what did I personally gain from this weekends event?

Firstly theres the gratitude that Ive continued to blog about a topic that I care about, despite numerous moments of self-doubt and the odd period of burn-out.  BritMums Live served as a reminder of why I started blogging.  Its about the passion and the sharing.  This blog may be niche, but I do it because I care about my children and the generations that follow.  If I can learn and help shape positive change as a result of my discoveries, I will be happy that Ive done my job as a blogger.

Then theres the awesome support. A hugathon, full of old friends and new aquaintances. I tend to be one for discrete waving than shouting out a total roll-call, so I shall just say, quite warmly and with much appreciation, thank you all, you know who you are. And to my pals who buffered my nerves during the awards evening, and then boosted the flow of wine when I didnt win, an even bigger thank you to your good selves.

And finally, theres that kick up the backside again, the one where I should really pull my finger out and write that book. With great advice from author and mentor Antonia Chitty, I now need to jump those hurdles of time-conflicts, mobilise my resources and get cracking.

Of course, being a waste-geek at a conference that coincided with Recycle Week, I couldnt help cast my mind back to the fabulous contribution the community gave to the campaign, just three years ago in 2009, and I wondered if there could be scope again.  It was much fun with lots of people rising to the challenge and demonstrating tonnes of creativity in spreading the word, so I very much hope it can happen again.

In the meantime, theres no way a rubbish blogger should really end a blogpost about a blogging conference, without demonstrating some evidence about what bloggers are doing to shrink their rubbish.

So heres my old pal and Rubbish Dieter, Tim, author and blogger at Bringing up Charlie, who after a dash of wine, attempts to reveal the fullness of his relatively new compost bin.  He slimmed his bin by 50% you know!

Oh yes, sorry I forget to say, the conference may be called BritMums Live, but in this age of equality, fathers are made welcome too.

(photo taken during UKAware 2009)

If youve got any free time on Friday of Saturday and can get into London, Ive got a real treat for your diary, as the end of this week sees the launch of the 4th year of  UKAware, the UKs leading sustainable living show.

Running from Friday 25th to Saturday 26th March, at London Olympia, it promises a fun packed programme of activities, seminars and workshops as well as aisles full of eco and ethical companies highlighting their products and services.

This will be the third year that I have trekked down to London to visit the show and I love it!  Not only does it give you a chance to keep up with the latest news and solutions in sustainability but it is also a brilliant opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new people too.

If you want to find out more about whats going on at UKAware this year, then your first port of call is their website, where theres a fantastic blog showing whats coming up.  Also, check out Lucy Siegles Guardian article on Danny Carnegie, the founder of UKAware, who reveals a few unexpected things about his background.  I suppose you could say hes not your average event organiser by any means.

So what am I looking forward to the most this year?  Bearing in mind Ill have one of my kiddiwinks with me for the first time ever, I think it might be the childrens activities are most likely to be the highlight this year.  However Im also looking forward to catching up with my favourite stallholders, some lovely pals whom Ive met through this blog and a few of my literary friends too, including author of The Frugal Life, Piper Terrett, Book of Rubbish Ideas author, Tracey Smith, and sustainability writer Brigit Strawbridge, who will all be busy leading inspirational workshops and panels.

Whether youre coming from a serious angle, or just want to have some fun, UKAware is definitelly one of the unmissable events of the year.

So if you fancy coming along and want to meet up on the Saturday, then do let me know.  Ive also got TEN FREE TICKETS to give away to followers of this blog, which are valid for either date. These will go to the first ten people to email me at karen@therubbishdiet.co.uk.

So go on...I know youre tempted, even if its just a little bit........ and it really really really would be lovely to see you.

Saving energy on a supermarket sweep

A couple of weeks ago I attended a sponsored bloggers lunch at a sustainable restaurant in West Hampstead to mark the launch of Sainsburys consumer energy-saving initiative, in conjunction with British Gas.

British Gas and Sainsburys had already partnered to offer customers gas and electricity services through Sainsburys Energy but the buzz of the day or indeed that week was the launch of a new range of products and services that can actually save their customers energy while they shop!

Yes I know, I too have got that same image of busy customers flocking to Sainsburys and being wafted with natural fans and fruity cocktails, while the fresh young interns do the supermarket dash to fullfil that part of their training programme, leaving them suitably recharged to go about the rest of their business.  Ok, only in my own dreams then!

Cutting back to the real world, what we are really talking about here is a prime opportunity to help shoppers become more sustainable in their energy usage, through new services such as home insulation, solar panels and energy monitors.  This stuff that is normally reserved for the mysterious world of eco or sensible- living enthusiasts has finally made it onto a mainstream supermarket floor.

With six permanent energy centres and one mobile unit, Sainsburys customers will be able to get advice instore whilst picking up their weekly shopping, and for many, their starting point will be to book a home-assessment to calculate their current energy rating.  Of course, customers are rewarded with a range of Nectar points for any of the services and products they choose.

Now what I find quite interesting about all this, is not the service offering itself...  (despite the urgency for us all to save energy due to issues of peak oil and climate change, Im afraid that the subject doesnt quite float my daily boat)...but more so the increased opportunities that supermarkets have in influencing consumer behaviour.

With so many shoppers dependent on their local supermarkets for the bulk of their shopping, it makes sense that such major retailers can offer a range of services to help consumers become greener.  The more profitable the service is to a retailer, the more it can expand and deliver the message, and the more customers there will be sat at home saving energy and benefiting from reduced fuel bills.

Now being one of lifes dreamers, during the last couple of weeks, Ive let my thoughts wander in a rather frivulous direction about the power that supermarkets have to influence consumer action and how they can actively raise awareness to help customers keep their green halos polished to a sparkle.  And I have to admit, Ive seen some great examples on the Sainsburys website about what theyre doing in the particular area that does get me very excited... i.e..reducing waste.

And in this sector (with the exception of some understandable localised disappointment) Sainsburys generally seems to be stepping up to the mark on strategic waste reduction initiatives, including reducing product packaging, leading a UK based  mixed plastics recycling trial and diverting food waste from landfill through donating surplus food to Fareshare, before even considering solutions such as anaerobic digestion.  The company is also working hard on its stock control and forecasting to reduce surplus food in the first place.

I suppose the only key things on my wish list that arent yet fulfilled are comprehensive onsite Tetra Pak recycling banks for customers to return the ubiquitous carton in areas where kerbside collection isnt available.  And I also think that supermarkets should give their support to washable nappies and sanitary products too, to help raise wider awareness that convenient products are available in our disposable oriented culture.

But coming back to the subject of energy you dont need to be a Sainsburys Energy customer to add loft insulation to your basket of energy-saving solution or any of their other products for that matter, but if you want to convert, bear in mind that their Green Energy solution is not available yet.  Apparently its in the pipeline (what a relevant turn of phrase) and wont be long.  For the moment the energy-saving products are the priority.

And finally, if youre a Sainsburys customer and you havent done so already, you might find it useful to hunt down the low energy lightbulb recycling bank. Apparently, news on the street is that theres now a bank in every store, making it a convenient solution to recycling your energy-saving bulbs.  And you can tell how long its been since Ive popped down to our local supermarket.  I took a tourist snap for my memoirs and made a mental note that its another service thats closer to home than my household waste recycling centre..its just a shame I forgot to take my bulbs while I was passing.  Oh well, no-ones perfect!  Maybe next time eh!

Blogger disclosure: the blogger lunch was arranged by PR company TVC, who also covered travel expenses to the event and provided attendees with a range of Sainsburys products as a thank you for attendance.   This has not influenced the nature of this post or indeed my opinion, as I would have attended anyway and reported back in the same way.  It just means it cost a lot less to get there, I had some food I could cook when I got back and if my hob was electric I could have monitored how much energy I used to cook it!
